Preparation for 11+ has always been a tradition at Hydesville and each year a significant number of pupils secure places at our local grammar schools. We understand that such places are not suitable for all pupils, so our regular tracking and monitoring enables us to support all pupils on the journey to success.

We are committed to driving academic excellence across all Prep School year groups and to ensuring that every child achieves their true potential by the time they leave us at the end of Year 6.

74% of our Year 6 pupils who sat the 11+ exam in September 2022 secured offers of a place at grammar school.

Integrated curriculum preparation

Our experienced teachers weave 11+ preparation seamlessly into the curriculum, starting as early as Year 2. Specialised preparatory work is incorporated into the curriculum for Year 5 pupils, with focused lessons leading up to the 11+ exams during the final weeks of the Summer term.

In Year 6, we dedicate the initial weeks of the Autumn term to collapsing the curriculum, ensuring thorough preparedness for the 11+ examinations.

The school focuses effectively on preparing pupils for 11+ examinations or entry to selective senior schools. Many pupils are successful in these examinations.

Strategic resources

We employ additional resources that focus rigorously on the key demands of the 11+ examinations, developing core skills in vocabulary, comprehension, and numerical understanding. Our investment in personalised online learning grants pupils access to relevant materials at home, including maths, literacy, reasoning, and problem-solving questions.

The learning platform not only aids in performance analysis but also enables tailored feedback for improvement, keeping parents informed of their child's progress.

Assessment and progress monitoring

We conduct GL and Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATs) in school to identify each child's potential, profile gaps, and determine their placement within the "zone of possibility" for grammar school success.

Individual profiles guide the identification of next steps for development, ensuring a targeted approach to maximise progress and unlock each child's academic potential.
