Hydesville Tower School

The Family School

Year 2

Welcome to Year 2.

First Day Information

On the first day in Year 2 the children are explained the daily routine and expectations. These will already have been outlined on the moving up day in July, so that the children already know what to expect in Year 2. The children then usually spend the first part of the morning talking about their Summer holiday and then write about it. This is an opportunity for the children to show their new teacher how neat their handwriting is and how they are able to form sentences. The second part of the morning is spent on revisiting mathematical techniques learnt in Year 1 and also introducing new concepts. The afternoon is used to reinforce the Golden Rules through discussion, followed by the children making an artistic poster to outline a Golden Rule of their choice.

Daily Routine

The children are taught Maths and English in the mornings. These are quite formal lessons where the children are expected to work quietly and independently. Children read to their teacher three times a week using the books from the school reading scheme. The afternoon lessons focus on the other subjects: History, Geography, Science, Art, Music and Information Technology. These are taught a little more informally and involve a lot of group and class discussions with follow up work. The children also learn about citizenship, friendships and health in Personal Social and Health Education lessons. Religious Education is taught from a Christian perspective in the Infant Department. In Year 2 the children learn about God's Messengers, Daniel, Easter and The Lord's Prayer. The children also have dance lessons once a week and they have the opportunity to learn the recorder and ballet as an optional lunchtime activity. They also begin having Physical Education lessons once a week where the children are expected to get changed independently, but are assisted if needed. The children have set homework every night in Maths and English based on what they have been taught at school, and so they are expected to complete it independently.
