Reception
Welcome to Reception.
First Day Information
On the first day in Reception the children have the daily routine and expectations explained to them. We talk about the Golden Rules which we follow in the Infant Department. The children then usually spend the first part of the morning settling in. They can enjoy tabletop activities such as jigsaws, drawing, colouring, construction and threading. The second part of the morning is spent on singing nursery rhymes and action songs, as well as getting to know their activities. The afternoon is when children make new friends during structured play time. Activities may include role play in the home corner, sharing books together, small world play such as the farm or the builders' yard, and Lego construction. At the end of the day the children will wind down and listen to a story.
Daily Routine
In the mornings the children are taught Mathematics and English (using the Ruth Miskin Read Write Inc. phonics scheme). These are more structured lessons where the children are expected to work quietly. The afternoon lessons focus on the other subjects: Knowledge and Understanding of the World, Art, Music, Personal Social and Health Education and Information Technology. These are taught in a variety of ways and often involve a lot of group and class discussion work and practical activities. Religious Education is taught from a Christian perspective in the Infant Department. We cover stories from the Old Testament such as Jacob, Joseph David, Jonah, Jeremiah and stories that Jesus told such as The Lost Sheep, as well are learning about the people Jesus met. The children also have dance lessons twice a week with a specialist teacher. Homework is set once a week which includes a piece of English, Mathematics or topic work.
