Problem Solving Reasoning and Numeracy

Within the Nursery children are supported in developing their understanding of problem solving, reasoning and numeracy (PSRN) in a broad range of contexts to help them to explore, enjoy, learn, practise and talk about their developing understanding. They are provided with opportunities throughout the daily routine and activities in order for them to practise and extend their skills in these areas and to gain confidence and competence in their use.

Aspects of PSRN here at Hydesville Nursery :

Numbers as labels and for counting - This is about how children gradually know and use numbers we promote this through  counting in play, and eventually helping the children to recognise and use numbers reliably, in order to help them to develop mathematical ideas and to solve problems.

Calculating - This is about how we help children to develop an awareness of the relationship between numbers and amounts and know that numbers can be 'added together' and also by "taking away' and that two or more amounts can be compared.

Shape, space and measures - This is about how through talking about shapes and quantities, children can develop appropriate vocabulary, and children can use their knowledge to develop ideas and to solve mathematical problems.

What (PSRN) means for children children attending our Nursery :

Within our Nursery we have a wide range of Mathematical equipment that help  the children investigate and progress through these areas from, Bead threading, Dominoes, Jigsaws, Sorting objects, Pegs, Unifix Cubes, Number and Shape sheets and many more.

  • Children's mathematical development occurs as they seek patterns, make connections and recognise relationships through finding out about and working with numbers and counting, with sorting and matching and with shape, space and measures.
  • Children are able to use their knowledge and skills in these areas to solve problems, and are able to generate new questions and make connections across other areas of Learning and Development.
