The Infants Department

Welcome to the Infants Department

In the Infant Department the children have the opportunity to further develop the skills they have already learnt in Nursery. There is also a more formal style of education consisting of a full and varied curriculum which encourages creativity, independence and self-confidence. The department consists of Reception, Year1 and Year 2.

Here we concentrate mainly on the three core subjects of English, Maths and Science. We believe that if your child has a solid grasp of these areas they will enjoy and progress well in other areas too. We follow the Ruth Miskin Read Write Inc. phonics scheme of reading and writing throughout Infants.

All children in the Infant Department participate in singing and dancing as part of their school week and Year 2 also have Physical Education with specialist staff. Other extra curricular activities include Ballet, Elocution and Musical Instrument workshops.

One of our highlights of the week is our assembly which takes place each Friday morning in the gym. This is an opportunity for parents, grandparents and carers to come and celebrate children's achievements and birthdays.

In the Infant Department we follow the Golden Rules:

  • We are gentle - We don't hurt others
  • We are kind and helpful - We don't hurt anybody's feelings
  • We listen - We don't interrupt
  • We are honest - We don't cover up the truth
  • We work hard - We don't waste our own or others time
  • We look after property - We don't damage or waste things

Children are taught these rules through lessons, circle time, PSHE and play.

Special Events throughout the year :

Christmas is always a time when families join in the festivities. The Infants perform the Nativity and the sing-a-long to parents and carers at the end of the Autumn term.

Another very popular event is the Pancake Race which is held in the Spring term followed by the Easter Hat Parade.

Sports day is always an exciting time where children participate in activities like running, egg and spoon race and obstacle races. Parents are also encouraged to take part and we can boast that we always have a very good turn out.

Towards the end of the Summer term we hold a Summer Fete which is organised by the Friends of Hydesville. This is a fun packed day for the whole family to enjoy, which includes face painting, fancy dress, tombola, various stalls and refreshments.
