Food & Nutrition Department
Studying Food will:
Help the development of young people's personal, social and health education through the principles of healthy eating, food safety and hygiene. It will give all pupils the opportunity to have practical Food lessons in order to experience and develop a range of practical skills. We have always been ahead of government thinking- Schools' Secretary Ed Balls wants Food Lessons to be compulsory for all pupils by 2011; we have been doing this at Hydesville since 1997!
Aim:
All pupils the opportunity to have a series of practical Food lessons in order to experience and develop a range of practical skills.
To prepare and equip pupils for life and encourage them to enjoy the experience of cooking and make healthy choices.
Structure:
Key stage 3:
All pupils work in small groups of 8-10 for one term for and have lessons of approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. Through a range of interesting and varied recipes they develop a range of practical skills from preparation of fruit and vegetables to home made pastry.
Key stage 4:
Food & Nutrition is a popular option with both boys and girls at GCSE and since 2002 we have had 100% pass rate.
Careers and Higher Education:
Pupils have since gone on to local catering courses.
Trips & Educational Visits:
We enter The Rotary Young Chef of the Year competition and have had an outstanding record of success since 2002. Most years we have won the Walsall Schools' Final at both Key stages. This year Matthew Lee Year 9 won the Key stage 3 section and Amelia Pedley the Key stage 4 section.
