English

English is taught on a daily basis in all year groups.  Children are in ability groups from year 4 onwards.  We cover a range of skills to provide a varied curriculum.

Year 3

In year 3 the children study many different aspects of fiction, iincluding stories with familiar settings, plays, callagrams and shape poems, myths and legends, traditional stories, poetry from different cultures, narrative stories based on adventure and mystery stories and narrative study of authors and letters. In non-fiction they discuss and create non -chronological reports, note aking and instructions, information texts, writing letters and recount texts. The children also carry out comprehension, grammar and word work related to all of the topics covered.

Year 4

In year 4 English lessons they produce excellent creative writing, and work hard on comprehension skills.  Pupils also look at many new grammar topics: including speech marks, sentence structure and how to use paragraphs. They also have a focussed handwriting session and it is during Year 4 they begin to write in ink pen. There is a weekly spelling test and also occasional spot spell tests on commonly misspelt words.

Year 5

In English, we engage with a range of genres which include fantasy stories, play scripts, newspaper reports, poetry, persuasive writing and narrative story openers.  Comprehension skills are developed and children are encouraged to use inference and deduction to give more detailed responses.  Through weekly spellings, children are encouraged to widen their vocabulary and understanding of English language.  Class discussions and presentations of book reviews and poetry help to develop speaking and listening skills.

Year 6

We focus on developing the range and depth of writing styles that each child can access and utilise effectively within different contexts and situations. This includes the development and usage of :- narrative, characterisation, chronological and non-chronological reports, use of persuasion, argument and hyperbole, and writing in biographical and journalistic styles.

In addition, each child is targeted to ensure the progression and development of key skills in higher order reading and comprehension, within a range of genres and contexts.  English is assessment driven and we cater to the children's individual needs.
