Assessment
Formal assessment takes place in May each year, Years 3, 4 and 5 undertake NFER tests in English, Maths, Spelling, Reading, Verbal Reasoning and Non-verbal Reasoning. The reading test now takes the form of an online reading test. The results give a national standardised score so teachers, parents and students can see how the results compare to other children their age. The results of these tests are analysed and then inform subsequent teaching which takes place, targetting weaker areas.
Year 6 also have a formal assessment in May in the form of the national SAT tests.
Other informal assessments in key subject areas take place at the end of each half-term. In English and Maths these give a national curriculum level so progress can be tracked throughout the year. Results from these tests not only indicate how well the pupils are progressing, but also inform the teacher on areas which need further consolidation.
Children are also expected to complete weekly spelling and tables tests, set by their individual teachers in those subjects. Year 5 complete a weekly test in Reasoning.
